About the house · The Bentleys

A home with
a history of
welcoming people.

Built in 1910 by local builder James Elzy Wire, this Craftsman was once at the edge of Davis, on land that had been part of the original Jerome Davis farm.

William and Laura Bentley bought the house in 1944. William owned a farm in Winters and worked locally, including maintaining pools for UC Davis Athletics. Laura worked in a university lab, taught ceramics, and was active in the Davis Community Church and Senior Center.

The Bentleys rented the upstairs room to university students. Long before today's campus visits and family weekends, this house was already giving people a place to land in Davis.

Today, Bentley Boarding House continues that tradition of welcoming people while preserving the home's Craftsman character.
